Pacific Saury is common to eat food in parts of east Asia. Small round body shape; After the dorsal fin, 5-6 small fins, with 6-7 free fins behind the anal fin; Two protuberances, but not long, thin teeth; Dark blue in the back of the body, white in the abdomen, and slightly yellow at the back of the kiss and tail. Pacific saury (often marketed as "mackerel pike") are sought after by Chinese, Taiwanese, Russian, North and South Korean and Japanese fishermen.

This fish has great economic importance where it is found. Suitable for frying or charcoal cooking. Bait fish or pet feed for large tuna fishing, rich in protein and fat, the body is delicious, so it can be steamed, boiled, Fried, baked, and cheap. According to the analysis of nutrition composition of qiuchiyu from Shanghai university of aquaculture, the protein content of the fish is 20.7%. 


Saury, is one of the most prominent seasonal foods representing autumn in Japanese cuisine. Other condiments may include soy sauce, lime, lemon, or other citrus juices. Salt-grilled saury is also served in Korea, where it is known as kkongchi gui (꽁치구이).


The fish can also be pan-fried or canned kabayaki.


Simmered saury (꽁치조림, kkongchi-jorim) is a common variety of jorim, Korean traditional simmered foods.


Pacific saury is also popular in Russia which has direct access to the Pacific Ocean. In Russia it is sold in tinned variant with salt and spice, sometimes with addition of vegetable oil or tomato sauce.


In some Western countries it is used for fish meal and pet food.
